“The
Digital Age of Technology”
A.
Introduction
It
is our pleasure to warmly present to you with our topic “The Digital Age of
Technology”. Through our group’s project, we will attempt to show how advances in
technology have changed the way people lead their daily lives. We will also
highlight the changes and milestones technology has come across. We chose this
topic for we thought it would be very informative to our audience. We felt that
our lives during this era revolves around technology very much and that
consumers, in this case, our classmates, deserve a right to know about the
roots of technology, of how it was thought up of, how it has progressed through
time, and lastly, its benefits and impacts. Throughout our project, we have embedded
many statistics and research-based examples and facts to detail and give a
professional touch to it. Apart from covering all of the points as mentioned
above, we have also added our personal insights into each and every segment to create
an easily comprehendible effect that attracts the listeners for its persuasive
yet very relatable circumstances.
B. Body:
Summary
We started off
by giving the definition of technology, in a nutshell. We then went on to discuss
about technological development. First, we talked about how technology evolves
as well as gave illustrative examples of how adding new functions and features
to an existing product created newly formed final products. Research was very
much needed in the evolvement of technology and what pushed humans into
creating such technology was the need to meet their daily requirements. It was
also stated in our project about how the first forms of technology that trace
back to the early Stone and Bronze ages has helped significantly in developing
an idea and the prototypes into better and improved forms of technology used
today. The very first stages and types of technology that made a successive
emergence in the technology evolution were the tool, the machine, and
automation in order of sequence of the first, second and third stages of
technological development. Lastly, for this part, we raised the awareness of
how people are forgetting about their technological heritage and the changes by
stressing on the pace and scale of occurrence technological development has
made within the twentieth century alone. Within our topic, we divided it into
three sub-topics, in which the first, communication, with the mobile phone, for
its convenience and sophistication. We talked about the advantages of the
mobile phone as it is very efficient both time and energy-wise. We then went on
to discuss about its features and purposes of functioning as a personal diary,
organizer, notebook, calculator, alarm clock, media (music, videos and news)
player, camera and voice recorder. Apart from this, the improvement of
technology has helped people to access, stay connected and updated to their
emails and news via the internet at anytime and anyplace they want. It has drastically
changed our everyday lives. The second sub-topic was education. To specify what
technology has done to our modern lifestyles, we raised a particular and
commonly-known device called the computer, which has been changing from time to
time through the advancement of technology. We gave a brief introduction and
history of computers. We mentioned how before, computers used up a lot of power
(electricity) and space, but through time, they have evolved into light, multi-functional
and reliable devices that consume much less power. Furthermore, we raised the
different kinds of areas computers were of assistance to us. Not only are
computers used for study and entertainment purposes, they are also used for
medical purposes. The third and last sub-topic was entertainment with
videogames. The first ever videogame which was invented by William Higinbotham
in 1958 and it was called, “Tennis for Two”. Videogames have become the world’s
popular choice of entertainment for people of all ages because it can be played
everywhere from the television screen with a console in your living room,
computer in your room to on-the-go with portable handheld devices and cell
phones. By playing videogames, people will gain a lot of benefits such as
increasing intelligence, boosting their brain power and improving their social
skills. Videogames are widely used as a physical therapy in the medical
department to remove people’s physical injuries. Finally, we stated that videogames
are very entertaining. After discussing about the three sub-topics, we went on
to talk about the impacts of technology on our daily lives. When talking about
daily impacts on our lives, we surely focus on the positive and negative sides
of it. As we know, technology is a sign of civilization, and it has changed our
old-fashioned lives to new and modern ones, since it has made interactions
between human and appliances a whole new experience. Imagine how hard it was to
perform tasks in the past. Now, with the help of machineries, these tasks can
be done more easily and effectively than ever. Another thing is that our study
lives have been facilitated to a much higher extent through the modern and
reliable studying materials. However, such material as the computer also has
its downsides of having a bad influence on students since there are many
videogames available on that particular device. Once students are exposed to
videogames, they will begin to feel addicted and, inevitably, lose
concentration on their studies. Lastly, technology has connected us through to
the world by the means of communication. The mobile phone is one example to
help people keep in touch with one another even if they live continents away.
However, excessive usage of this device could lead to brain and heart problems
caused by its radio wave the device produces. After that, we summarized all the
main points and ended the presentation with positive message and gesture of
“Leaping towards the future with technology!”
B. Reflection
Problems
arose since the very beginning of our project. It took us a couple of days to
reach our final decision of choosing this topic; we had a lot of disputes and
discussion in order to compromise with each other. After choosing the topic, we
faced another problem, since the topic we had chosen was too broad. We found
some ideas regarding its impacts to the society and their usage in some
particular fields like entertainment, education, and communication. We then
assigned each of our members and asked them to finish their tasks some time
earlier before the deadline. We managed to get the job done with a day left for
rehearsal. On the presentation day, everyone was feeling a mixture of emotions:
nervousness, anxiety and joy. Our nerves showed and consequently, some
of the presenters forgot their speech but they did a great job of covering it
up. The pressure was off our chest when it ended, we were quite satisfied with
our presentation. Looking back at that experience, we definitely have to
improve on our time management skills, perhaps rehearse more and we have learnt
a lot from our mistakes and those feedbacks. We appreciate the lecturer’s and
classmates’ comments and will take them into consideration in order to improve
our skills and potentials of becoming professional presenters next time.
